Ordering the Chaos
Wise men have long explored the mystery of the origins of life. The Creator formed the heaven of heavens, the third heaven, the seat of His divine Majesty, the starry host, and the habitation of angels out of nothing – so they claim. Scholars believe that He formed what is tangible from nothingness. But, Psalm 33:6 suggests an alternate view. “By the word (dabar) of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host” (Psalm 33:6).
Psalm 33:6 claims that the heavens were made through the Almighty’s word or dabar. The word dabar refers to sound. Dabar invariably describes an utterance or audible speech in scripture. The Almighty has a voice, and He uses His voice as the power and force of creation.
When it came to creating, He had pre-existent matter to work with. The audible sounds of His speech were the building blocks of creation. The cosmos sprang into existence from these primal sounds. Elohim only had to speak verbal commands for the universe to arise in all its grandeur.
His power, through the efficacy and virtue of spoken words, replaced the chaos and arranged the disorganized nothingness. In other words, His voice alone transformed non-order, tohu v’bohu in Genesis 1:2, into light, life, plants, animals, humans, and, in fact, everything. Man should stand in awe of Him who brought everything into existence simply by speaking.
Because we have a measure of His Spirit, we are miniature creators. We can use our words to bring restoration from chaos and heal our broken world.
