How We Hear His Heavenly Voice

The Almighty is always speaking.  He communicates in ordinary ways to ordinary people.  His ability to speak is never in question.  But our ability to hear Him is often hindered by our humanness, and lack of teaching on how to listen.  This message encourages believers to be attentive and expectant of His communication in their lives.   It explores:

•    Ten biblical ways He speaks.

•    Reasons we may not hear Him.

•    How to discern it really is Him speaking.

Biblical Assurance that He Speaks:

•   Isaiah promises an audible, guiding word behind us, Isaiah 30:21.

•   An entire crowd heard Him differently, John 12:28-29.

•   The Israelites heard His voice from the midst of fire, Deuteronomy 4:33.

•   Yeshua insists His sheep hear His voice, John 10:27.

His Goodness:

•   The Almighty speaks because He is good, not because we deserve it. 

•   His words bring life and health, Proverbs 4:20, 22.

Ten Biblical Ways He Speaks:

•   Scripture –  2 Timothy 3:16, Isaiah 55:11, Luke 24:13-27.

•   Audible Voice – Exodus 33:9, 1 Samuel 3:4-14, Acts 9:10, Acts 16:14, Revelation 1:12.

•   Prayer – 1 Kings 18:36-37, Acts 22:17-21.

•   Dreams – Job 33:15-16, Matthew chapters 1 and 2.

•   Visions – 1 Samuel 3:1, Genesis 15:1, Acts 7:56.

•   Holy Spirit – John 16:13, Luke 2:25-32.

•   Signs – 1 Corinthians 1:22, Judges 6:37-40.

•   Circumstances – Exodus 2:1-14.

•   Other people – 2 Kings 5:3.

•   Handwriting on the wall – Daniel 5:5.

Why We Might Not Hear Him:

•   Failure to listen – Isaiah 28:23.

•   Believing He doesn’t speak today – Psalm 5:3.

•   Disappointment – Psalm 13.

•   Sin – Isaiah 59:2.

•   Fear – Luke 1:18-20.

•   Distractions – 1 Samuel 3:10.

•   Preoccupation with the world – Luke 8:14.

Encouragement:

•   Ask, seek, and knock to hear Him,  Matthew 7:7.

•   Walk confidently in His silence, Isaiah 50:10.

Discerning His voice:

•   Are the words Scriptural?  Numbers 23:19

•   Do the words give us Shalom?  James 3:17, Colossians 3:15

•   Will heeding this message lead to sin?  Psalm 119:11

•   Do the words glorify Him?  John 16:14
